Previously a shuttered city-owned library, the site at 1403 North Gardner Street will re-open in 2019 as Bridge Housing for 30 women experiencing homelessness. Women make up one of the most vulnerable and fastest-growing subset of the homeless population, and ensuring they have the resources and housing specific to their needs is crucial to addressing homelessness in Council District Four.
TIMELINE
• November 8, 2017: Councilmember Ryu co-introduces a motion to City Council to study the former library site for Bridge Housing opportunities.
• January 31, 2018: City Council approves a study of the property for bridge housing.
• February 20, 2018: Councilmember Ryu, City and LAHSA officials, and community members discuss the potential project in a neighborhood meeting.
• May 29, 2018: The site is approved for HHH funding.
• October 2018: Final design completed, along with renderings of the future Women’s Bridge Housing site.
• November 2018: Construction begins. Exterior facade to remain in place with the majority of work being done on the interior of the building.
• Summer 2019: Construction and remodeling complete. Doors open on the North Gardner Street Women’s Bridge Housing Site to provide 30 women previously experiencing homelessness with a temporary home, counseling and services, and a pathway to more permanent housing and stability.
